I chose level four of the technology free challenge. I was kind of nervous about how I was going to manage it when Ayla and I had the brilliant idea to do it together. So Saturday morning i show up at her house (an hour late as usual) and then by 12 o'clock we had procrastinated long enough and began the challenge.
We spent the first few hours listening to records from her fathers collection as well as the ones I had found from my fathers annoyingly small collection. While listening to them we made Escher kaelido-something-or-others that we pretty and fun at first but then just dissolved into frustrating gluey messes. So we gave up on those.
Afterward we went for a long walk and Ayla managed to lose her shoe in a ditch so then we had to go and get it, scratching her ankle on the way down which resulted in her hobbling the rest of the walk. The original purpose was to go visit her landlords horses but when we finally got there they were in the far off pasture so we just settled for staring at them from afar.
Later that night we went to Pothole Pictures in Shelburn and saw the movie 'Singing in the Rain' which was still within what we were allowed to do because it was projected with a projector that had a flame in it and everything.
When we got home we made a mistake and played with some remote control cars which was disappointing when we realized we couldn't play with them. (I needed to get her back for making my guy go flying so many times...) anyways, we were starting to get tired by then so we just pulled out some paper and started drawing. I lasted probably half an hour before my head drooped and I made Ayla go to bed with me.

The next morning we woke up at 9:30 and ate raspberry crepes while doing homework. We broke the rules again my accident when we attempted to do the chemistry homework (which, might I add, should never be attempted that early in the morning and without coffee.) We then meandered around the house doing this and that for the next few hours until finally it was over.
In order to celebrate we spent the rest of the afternoon drinking hot chocolate and watching Phantom of the Opera.

Overall I enjoyed this challenge, although I know part of that was the fact that I got to spend time with Ayla and we did a lot more talking and simpler forms of entertainment then we would have any other time.

Response to Technopoly

Technopoly came off as a very paranoid book in my opinion. The author seemed convinced that eventually technology would reach the point of no longer being a helpful thing. He seemed to think that it was going to dilute our human capabilities to the point that we would forget how to do the most basic things and all he is nervous that it is going to give us an overload of information that will only confuse our lives ever more. In some cases I can see his point; like the information overload such as Facebook, Twitter and even Google. But saying that we're going to become slaves towards technology is slightly far fetched I think, because we're mainly inventing machines that help us with daily activities, not machines to tell us what to do. I believe that Technopoly is a good warning about the absolute worst possible scenario when it comes to the outcome of technology.
